In Memoriam: Sayan (WS17 batch)

With heavy hearts, we share the news of Sayan’s (WS17 batch) passing – a cherished member of our community.

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and alumnus Sayan (WS17 batch) has passed away.

Towards the end of his PhD in the group of Christian Limberg in 2021, Sayan was suddenly confronted with serious health issues from which he, unfortunately, never fully recovered. Most recently, he had started a new treatment in Delhi, which his body could not withstand, leading to his untimely death.

We are all deeply shaken by this loss. Less than two months ago, around his birthday, we exchanged a few emails. He told me that his health was “okayish” and that he remained hopeful that things would improve by the end of the year. He was proud to have submitted his dissertation after much effort and was looking forward to his defense. He even considered returning to Berlin one day, writing: “I miss those Berlin days. Once I get stable I might return again ;)”.

It is heartbreaking that he could not realize his dreams. So young, so full of life. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

We will never forget you, Sayan – your warm smile, your sense of humor, and the many conversations we shared, both scientific and personal. You will always remain in our hearts.
