"Spreading light wherever he went"

One of our first batch alumni says goodbye - Fare well dear Superboy! We will miss you!

It is with incredible pain that we learnt some weeks ago that our great friend and BIG-NSE alumni Dr. Subhamoy Bhattacharya passed away after several years of struggle against a leukemia. Subhamoy or  "Superboy" as he sometimes presented himself, was part of batch WS08, the first batch of BIG-NSE students to receive a funding from our program. Before coming to Berlin, he had been studying Chemical Engineering in India (MTech at IIT Kharagpur, BTech at West Bengal U. of  Tech.), where he came from (Kolkata), then writing his Master thesis at RWTH Aachen as a DAAD International Scholar. Subhi's time at the BIG-NSE was very successful. He finished his PhD after 3,2 years with the "Summa Cum Laude" grade (the highest possible) and wrote six publications. Being extremely popular among his peers, he was elected student representative of the BIG-NSE students for several years. After a short time as post doctoral researcher in a UniCat group (AK Kraehnert) at TU-Berlin after his PhD, he was hired at BASF, where he was employed (lately as Technology Manager at the department  Global Petrochemicals) until his death. Although he then lived in Ludwigshafen, he often would come back to Berlin to give a talk within our regular "Alumni meetings" or to moderate our "Catslam" in 2015 for example. But Subhamoy was not only a great scientist, he was also a wonderful person, always in a good mood and ready to help his friends, a loving husband and a dedicated father.

As one of his batch mates, Sara, speaking for all of us, put it after learning about his death "It is not fair - torn away way too early, not being allowed to see his daughter grow up, forever missed by his loved ones. He was so strong, talented with speech, humour, intelligence and ambition. I always admired him. A friend and a leader. Kind and funny. Spreading light wherever he went. Subhamoy, Subhi, Superboy, in my country we say that a beloved child has many names. You were a beloved child! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️".

Dear friend, we will never forget you. May your soul rest in peace. Our most sincere condolences to your family!
